Catalyst Open Source Academy welcomes applications

During every summer holiday, students from around New Zealand spend two weeks at Catalyst's Wellington headquarters to learn about and experience Free-Libre / Open Source Software (FLOSS). The next Catalyst Open Source Academy will take place from 7 to 18 January 2019.

Students learn the software development lifecycle first-hand and engage in activities around business analysis and usability, setting up a server in the cloud, programming in at least one popular programming language, connecting a database to their application, creating a logo and theme, and testing their application.

In the second part of the programme, students work with mentors to contribute to an open source project. Projects in the past have included Koha, Mahara, Matomo, Drupal, and SilverStripe.

Year 11-13 students studying in New Zealand are invited to apply for this summer learning opportunity now. There is no fee associated with the programme. Students are responsible for their own transport, accommodation, and living expenses.

Catalyst has been organising the Academy since 2011 and has graduated over 160 students over the years, many of whom have gone on to study an IT-related subject at a tertiary institution in New Zealand.
