Catalyst submission on a change to NZ's privacy legislation

We have made a submission on the Privacy Bill (2018), a bill designed to amend the Privacy Act 1993 which is currently being considered by Parliament’s Justice Select Committee. We support the bill. However, we believe that it doesn't go far enough towards ensuring the rights of data subjects and making sure that organisations implement adequate privacy procedures and safeguards. We support a number of changes advocated by the Privacy Commissioner. We also propose further changes designed to bring New Zealand's law more into alignment with the General Data Protection Regulation, about to come into force in the European Union, which we regard as setting an appropriate standard for global best practice in privacy regulation.
