Horowhenua Libraries celebrate 20 years of Koha with website update

Catalyst has collaborated with Horowhenua District Council to deliver an exciting new feel to their libraries web presence.

Horowhenua Libraries have continued 20 years of successful collaboration with library management platform Koha by revamping their Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC). Horowhenua Libraries were the first Koha library, funding the project back in 1999 when they discovered their existing proprietary library system had a Y2K bug and was no longer supported. Not wanting to be in that situation again, they released Koha as open source software, which is now used by 15,000 libraries worldwide.

The newly built features – including a new way to showcase resources, and making useful information easier to find - improve the look and feel of the OPAC, which makes the site more user-friendly and encourages increased use of the library services. Horowhenua Libraries has set the bar for Library websites all over with this update with admirers as far away as Nigeria looking to adopt the new theme, in true open source spirit.

Wendy Fraser, the Library Services Manager, had this to share:

Already we have had positive feedback, not just on the local front, but internationally. The Online Public Access Catalogue has turned out better than I envisioned. When we first met with Catalyst, I just had lots of ideas and a lot of what I didn’t want. Catalyst designers have been able to take all of that and make it a reality. It has been a very rewarding process, and we are delighted with the result.
