DIA improves learning and compliance training with Tōtara upgrade

Learn how the Department of Internal Affairs collaborated with Catalyst to improve their learning and compliance training.

Background

Catalyst worked with the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) as one of the first organisations to adopt Tōtara Learn in 2011. As long-term partners, they have seen DIA’s workforce and skillset grow and Catalyst was thrilled to support DIA to upgrade their Tōtara Learn site – iLearn.

Opportunity

DIA’s vast range of functions and large workforce makes it critical to have a comprehensive and efficient compliance and training scheme. However, achieving, maintaining, and measuring compliance can be challenging and time-consuming. With their previous system, DIA learners found it difficult to navigate learning materials and locate the appropriate courses, which would heavily demotivate staff and delay completion. Alongside this, the platform looked and felt outdated, making it easy to become disengaged.

Solution

Catalyst upgraded DIA’s iLearn site from Tōtara 2.6 to 12, transforming the learning experience while streamlining and improving managers’ experiences.

Key features included:

A modern look and feel: The design refresh has created a more enjoyable experience for users. For example, the course catalogue is now displayed through tiles, improving searchability and overall user experience.

Increased accessibility and engagement: The upgrade means iLearn is now responsive so learners and managers can access iLearn from their mobiles and tablets. This, in conjunction with easier navigation of the course catalogue content, has increased accessibility and engagement.

“Our users really appreciate how easy it is to find the learning material they are after, and the managers are extremely happy with their new dashboard.”

Ben Shields, Learning Management System Manager, DIA

Massively beneficial in increasing our knowledge

Greater insights into data: Managers are presented with a clean, modern dashboard displaying compliance details, courses left to complete, and upcoming staff training. Now, managers have a precise and easy way to monitor and support their teams to maximise their performance.

Personalised training: Catalyst’s Tōtara experts trained DIA’s Learning and Development team on their new platform, which Ben Shields – DIA’s LMS Manager – found “massively beneficial in increasing our knowledge and preparing us for the go-live process.”
