Catalyst is pleased to announce the two recipients of the 2025 Catalyst Open Source scholarships and internships: Fyfa Main and Maria Sokolova. Over four weeks in the summer break, the two spent time with internal systems, security, AI, Cloud services, Mahara, the business analysis team, and marketing. Each week, they gained hands-on experience, discovered different career paths, and sharpened their technical skills. We caught up with the interns at the end of their internship to see how they found the experience.

Meet the 2025 Catalyst Open Source Scholarship recipients
Catalyst offers two scholarships to students in tech-related fields every year. In 2025, the recipients also had a four-week internship at our Wellington offices.
Making real change in the industry
Fyfa Main is studying Computer Science with a specialisation in Cyber Security and a minor in Artificial Intelligence at Te Herenga Waka, Victoria University of Wellington. From a young age, Fyfa knew she wanted to do something in the technical sphere. From making websites about her cat in intermediate to now seven years later, using her love for problem-solving she hopes to build her way up the Cyber Security ladder to become chief information security officer (CISO).
When asked about the impact of the internship, Fyfa reflects, "The internship and Catalyst Open Source Scholarship was the confidence boost I needed to confirm that I love tech and I can make real change in the industry."
"The experience has inspired me to work on other projects, expand more, and think bigger. Getting to do this internship alongside other smart and hard-working wāhine was beyond empowering and inspiring and highlighted the need for women across all aspects of software."
Fyfa chose to apply for the Catalyst internship and scholarship as she resonated with our passion for open source and data sovereignty for Aotearoa and Māori.
She continues, "I was so blessed to have this opportunity to explore different fields in Catalyst and technologies and systems that I otherwise wouldn’t have had access to. Every day at Catalyst was an opportunity to learn, grow and connect, and that's why I will forever be so thankful for this amazing opportunity."
Gaining confidence in many skills
Maria Sokolova is studying for a Bachelor of Arts and Science, majoring in Philosophy and Data Science at the University of Otago. She enjoys that both areas are broad as she works to find her niche. As someone passionate about advocating for mental health and the environment, Maria chose subjects that would strengthen her skills. Her interest in the open source philosophy drew her to apply for the Catalyst Open Source scholarships.
Reflecting on her internship, Maria shares, “My time at Catalyst was fantastic. From the first day to the end, everyone I met from each team we got to shadow was friendly and supportive. It was great to work in an environment where anyone I approached had a wealth of knowledge they were eager to share. The opportunity to learn how the different teams operate helped me gain more confidence in many skills."
Struck by the energy of the open source community, Maria is excited to contribute to open source projects and share what she learnt with her classmates. As the president of two student clubs - the Otago Computing Students Society (OCSS) and the Women in STEM Otago (WiSO), Maria is grateful to dedicate more time to supporting her peers this year.
