SmartStart gives growing families the information they need

Catalyst collaborates with the DIA to create SmartStart to provide the best start for families.

Background

SmartStart was the first in a series of ‘life event’ portals spearheaded by the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA). It brings together information and services from different government agencies, so everything users need is in one place.

Opportunity

DIA chose Catalyst to create a website that brings together all government services for expectant and new parents in one place.

So, instead of wasting time searching for information and services, parents have everything they need to establish a baby’s future digital relationship with the government in one place. Users can:

  • find a midwife,
  • apply for financial assistance,
  • register a baby’s birth,
  • and more.

Solution

Our design team and UX specialists worked closely with DIA to develop a look and feel that was smart, engaging and appealing. Plus, creating a site that is intuitive and easy to use.

Information tailored to a user's profile

A personalised timeline helps users navigate the site. Soon, they can choose which government agencies they share their information with. Therefore, they don't have to repeat details on application forms.

"Catalyst provides a professional, flexible and high-quality service. We'd work with them again."

- Claire Toufexis, Manager, Life Events Services, DIA

The build

Using the Agile development process, we built the site using Django and React JS. It features RealMe integration and is hosted on AWS. SmartStart is responsive and works beautifully on mobile, tablet and desktop.

Once the site was live, SmartStart shared the following insights.

  • 5,000 unique visits in the first ten days
  • 15,000 users in the first month
  • 51 links to other services
  • 2,746 visitors checked their to-do list items.

Award-winning design and UX

SmartStart is a Merit Winner(external link) in the 2017 Gold Quill Awards programme. The programme is presented by The International Association of Business Communicators (IABC).
