Keep Koha visitors engaged with videos

Video can be a powerful tool for telling stories and connecting with communities. In 2024, New Zealanders spent an average of 7 hours per week consuming online content, with video content being the most popular format. Libraries are creating useful video content for their communities, such as library guides, “how-tos”, interviews with librarians, authors or even students. Did you know that you can easily include these resources in your Koha? Aleisha Amohia, Rōpū kohinga Technical Lead, shares how to embed a YouTube video on the Koha online public interface (OPAC).
How to embed a YouTube video in Koha
Please note, YouTube is used as an example throughout the blog post, but the steps are similar for embedded code from other video platforms.

1. Go to your YouTube video and click the Share button (circled in blue).
2. In the Share pop-up window, click the Embed button (circled in blue).
3. This will open a window with some code. Click the Copy button (circled in blue).
4. Log in to your Koha staff interface, then go to the Tools module. Under the Additional tools list, go to HTML customisations. You can either edit an existing entry or make a new one. Make sure you choose to use the text editor so you can easily paste the embed code.
5. Paste the Embed code directly in the Content box. Ensure the other details are correct, then hit the Save button. Make sure you include the:
- Display location: Choose an area on your OPAC for your video to show, such as the OpacMainUserBlock.
- Title: This does not show on the OPAC, but should describe what the HTML customisation contains so you can differentiate it from any others.
Bonus tip: You can schedule your video in advance by selecting your preferred publish date. Otherwise, your video will upload on today’s date.
6. Enjoy the newly embedded video on your Koha public interface!
Optionally, you can return to the HTML customisations editor in the staff interface to add content around the video.
- If you’re comfortable writing in HTML, use the text editor.
- To use formatting buttons without touching the code, use the WYSIWYG editor. For example, you may choose to add a heading and some introduction text to your OPAC.
